Pink Shirt Day at Cortech

At Cortech, we know a safe workplace isn’t just about hard hats and harnesses, it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels respected and valued. With Pink Shirt Day coming up, we’re taking the opportunity to shine a light on how kindness and inclusion can make a difference, not just in our personal lives but in our professional lives too.

What’s Pink Shirt Day?

Pink Shirt Day started back in 2007 when two high school students in Nova Scotia, David Shepherd and Travis Price saw a classmate being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Instead of just watching, they took action. They bought a bunch of pink shirts, handed them out, and turned their school into a sea of pink to show that bullying wasn’t welcome. What began as a small act of kindness has grown into a global movement, reminding us that standing up for each other matters.

Why It Matters in Our Industry

The construction industry is known for its grit and toughness, and sometimes a bit rough around the edges, but that doesn’t mean it has to be harsh or unwelcoming to the people who work in it. Whether on the worksite or in the office, creating a culture where everyone feels safe, heard, and valued isn’t just good for morale, it’s good for business. When people feel comfortable being themselves, they bring their best to the table.

At Cortech, we’re proud to be a diverse team. We've got people from all walks of life, representing different religions, genders, and sexual orientations, working side by side. Our multicultural team isn't just a checkbox, it’s our strength. We believe an inclusive workplace isn't just the right thing to do, it’s a foundation for success.

The construction industry is one of the most diverse fields out there, bringing together people from all kinds of backgrounds. On any given job site, you’ll find a mix of cultures, experiences, and perspectives, all working together to build something great. This diversity isn't just a strength; it’s a cornerstone of the industry’s innovation and resilience.

What Can You Do in Honor of Pink Shirt Day?

Wear Pink: Throw on a pink shirt to show your support. It’s a small gesture that sends a big message, that we stand against bullying and for inclusivity.

Speak Up: Whether it’s on a construction site or in a meeting room, if you see someone being treated unfairly, say something. The smallest gestures can make a difference.

Lead by Example: Treat everyone with respect, and don’t underestimate the power of a kind word or a helping hand. It can change someone’s whole day.

Celebrate Diversity: Take a moment to appreciate the different backgrounds and perspectives on your team. Ask a coworker about their story, you might learn something new and build a stronger connection.

Think empathetically: Treat others the way you’d want to be treated. Think back to a time when someone was unfair or unkind to you, would you really want to make someone else feel that way?

Let’s Work Together

Pink Shirt Day is a great reminder that while we build strong structures, we also need to build strong, inclusive teams. At Cortech, we’re committed to making sure everyone feels safe and valued, not just on Pink Shirt Day, but every day.

So, let’s lift each other up, and show that in our industry, there’s no room for harassment, intimidation, mistreatment, abuse, disrespect, or exclusion, only respect, kindness, inclusion, and support.
